This shirt was made from a scan of a zine by San Francisco’s Billboard Liberation Front that I have from the late ’90s. I’m a huge fan of “billboard liberation”..ie adding or subtracting from outdoor advertisements to make a different statement. We didn’t ask to have our eyeballs and minds subjected to the message of a corporation and the public space is for everyone.

I have personally done a few of these and I’m always on the lookout. One of my favorites was along Folsom St in San Francisco. I believe it was an ad for Citibank. It said “If your money could talk, it would say save me”. I changed it to read “If your money could talk, it would say blow me”..which I find both true and nicely subversive. Funny too I hope!
